I have discovered something that I really enjoy doing…shooting guns. Apparently, I am pretty good at it. More on that later.
Michael got his carry permit several years ago, he has been carrying everyday he goes to work because he works in a really really bad part of town. No telling what will happen. Hopefully nothing will ever happen. He has said something about me getting my permit but eh…I just kinda didn’t care.
The news was all rainbows and unicorns. Not really that excellent, but it was completely different. Everyday we wake up to the news in Memphis and someone has been murdered, raped, drive-by, babies being shot while they sleep in their beds…Memphis’s news is absolutely terrible. When we got back we had heard that a mob of teenagers attacked a Kroger customer in the parking lot, two Kroger employees ran out to help the person and the teenagers beat them up too. They even threw 20 lb pumpkins on their heads. Really? WTH is wrong with people. I say that every time I turn on the news. Who in their right minds thinks…Hey, let’s go to Kroger and attack someone in the parking lot. Oh yeah! That sounds like super fun…I’ll drive!
A week later at a Target in the afternoon, a lady was shot and killed in the parking lot. Turns out it was her firefighter ex-boyfriend. He was found in Florida and is now facing charges. But still a Target parking lot in the afternoon, do you know how many people are in and out of that store, to get hit by a stray bullet…at least that didn’t happen.
Michael told me last week that a guy on his bike was on the green line and went under the Wolf River Bridge and two guys asked him what time it was so he started to stop and look and the guys came after him with a knife. Seriously? Who does that?
Then about a month ago a mother and her teenage daughter were returning home from church and two black guys wearing bandanas busted up in their garage as they were getting out of the car. They had guns aimed at them. The teen started screaming and was able to run in the house, one guy ran off. The other was coming after the mom and she was screaming and throwing stuff at him and the Dad ran out in the garage with a gun and dude ran off.
About two weeks ago, at Barnes and Noble, which is an area we frequent every week, a lady was almost abducted into a van. She was able to scream and get loose and ran away from them. That too was also in the afternoon.
I don’t watch the news anymore and I have realized that I might not know a lot that is going on. Michael fills me in on stuff from time to time. I didn’t know what ISIS or what happened with that cop and that mob of people up north until we were in the airport at Dallas. I asked Michael and he told me to hush and google it. It’s not that I don’t care, I just hate turning on the news and its all bad…every single day.
Anyway…so we got home and groupon had a coupon for carry permit at Range USA and I talked with Michael about it and he said to go for it. I bought one and signed up for the class which I took last week. Prior to the class Michael took me to the range and we shot three guns. His is insane and is hard for me to use and I am afraid I might shoot someone just trying to load a bullet. So I shot it once and had enough. No way I could handle that by myself. We borrowed a 9mm and a 22 from my dad. I was able to shoot the 9mm and shot a bunch of rounds on it and shot 50 rounds with the 22. I like that gun! So I decided I would try the test with the 22.
The class was two nights, the first night was all lecture and some videos. It was really quite interesting. The next night was another video, small lecture, test, and range test. You had to make a 70 on both tests to qualify.
So Tuesday, I took the test and made a 100…and then we went and shot and I got a 100! The only person in the class to do so! Ha! I had two guys on either side of me and they were all like….DAMMMMMMMMN! I was pretty stoked. It was so cold in the range that I was shivering and I was a little nervous. The targets that Michael and I practiced on were big…then I realized that the ones we would test on were half the size. So I was a little worried. Turns out, I nailed it! I was so excited when I got home that I couldn’t sleep…mainly because of the adrenaline that comes with shooting a gun and bonus…only one to nail both! Ha!
So, I have a new hobby! I don’t have a gun yet. We are going to have a date night and go to Range USA and rent a couple to see what I like. Then maybe I can get one when we save up some cash monies. I went and filed for my permit at the DMV Friday and went and got fingerprinted Monday. So now I just wait to receive my permit and then I can legally carry. My problem is my clothes, I will have to wear baggier t-shirts when I do carry. All my clothes and pants are tight. It will be easier in the winter with sweaters etc. But anyway, I will hopefully be able to protect my kids.
They have a couple more classes that I want to take once I do get a gun. There is also a kids class for 6-10 year olds to teach them what to do when they find a gun, how to handle a gun, and how to shoot it. We have taught EK the 4 rules if she came across a gun: 1. STOP 2. DO NOT TOUCH 3. LEAVE THE AREA. 4. TELL AN ADULT. We repeat those quite often. I would like for her to take that kid class when she is a little older though.
I can’t wait to go back to the range though! So fun!!
